On September 8, Jonathan Levine Gallery in New York will open three solo shows byAudrey Kawasaki, Jeff Soto and Judith Supine. Known for her ethereal paintings of delicate heroines, Audrey Kawasaki (Hi-Fructose Collected Edition 2 cover artist) appears to have taken a new direction in her work, creating darker pieces that show her female protagonists with a sense of authority and occult sensuality. Jeff Soto (Hi-Fructose Vol. 16 cover artist) and Judith Supine’s works display a different kind of edginess, with Soto’s paintings exploring the ideas of death and regeneration and Supine’s collages playing with the concept of gender identity. Take a look at our preview of the three shows, images courtesy of Jonathan Levine Gallery.

Mika Aoki - Syringe (2009)
“I got this theme from the idea of a sperm bank. Sperm donations are classified according to educational background or appearance. Great expectations are entrusted to microscopic life which can be sucked up by syringes. From this point of view, I notice that my personality is breathing within each cell of my body.
The name and birthday of a patient are labeled on each blood sample tube like a title.”

I painted this piece in my old bedroom before making the move San Francisco to pursue a creative life. While I liked the piece fine, my growing fanbase loved it, and so I followed a spark that continued to grow. I got increasingly more comfortable with sharing my work to an audience, to the internet. Not long after, this piece was picked up by Urban Outfitters and was carried in their stores nationwide, which was incredibly exciting for me. So I continued sharing my work at all stages and processes along the way.I create art for my own fulfillment, it is my meditation, my quiet but persistent prayer, but I am so grateful every single day that others seem to enjoy the process as well. It allows me the freedom to continue following the waves of inspiration and for those to watch as my work is ever evolving and growing, with me close behind, or in front, i’m not sure. So, my team and I have decided to release this old classic, with other classics to come soon! ♥ ♥ Thank you for everything.
